The Great New Zealand Handwriting Challenge
The importance of handwriting TRANSFORMING LEARNING, LETTER BY LETTER
Did you know that handwriting is the strongest factor in writing achievement for juniors, and that it remains a strong factor throughout the primary school years?
The Great New Zealand Handwriting Challenge is an initiative set up to help share this knowledge.
The goals of the challenge are, to build a community of educators, to help share knowledge about the importance of handwriting, to ensure that it will soon be taught in every New Zealand classroom, for ten minutes, every single day.
STAEDTLER® is proud to support The Great New Zealand Handwriting Challenge, spearheaded by Dr Helen Walls (The Writing Teacher) and Dr Christine Braid (TEPiL (Teaching to Ensure Progress in Literacy), Massey University), and urge everyone to get involved today to ‘Transform learning, letter by letter’
Want to get involved, or require more information on how to introduce 10 minutes a day in to your lesson structure? Please contact Helen Walls using the contact details below or check out the web site & Facebook page.

Quotes from Teachers
“Under the fabulous guidance of Dr Chrissie Braid Hastings Central School have been working on their handwriting at least 4x per week. It is strictly guided and children are watched carefully to ensure best posture, shape, structure and size. What a difference! Formation has improved immensely and students and whanau are so impressed with how much they have all improved. The pride in their ability certainly shows by how focused they are during handwriting time” Beverly Ward
“Daily handwriting practice is often a time of zen like concentration. Students are thrilled to see the progress they have made when they flip back a few pages." Jude Pointon
